  • Demo and Safety with the horses

Blended Spirits Ranch (BSR) is a local non-profit 501c(3) organization providing care to children and adults within northwestern Pennsylvania. BSR mission is to provide a safe and structured environment for using Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) to help individuals feel empowered, build self-esteem, fight depression, and treat the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Autism Society Northwestern Pennsylvania provides information but it does not constitute medical or legal information. Referrals provided are suggestions to organizations that might help, but do not constitute a recommendation.

Annual Household Membership

Children are special gifts. Many of us search for that perfect toy car, doll, video game, or gift card to give a child for birthdays and holidays. At the Autism Society Northwestern Pennsylvania, we have a great gift idea for the growing number of families and professionals helping those with Autism…an annual membership.

This membership includes the sensory and social family outings for free or at reduced cost to many local sites and events in Erie.  We also offer member-only and member appreciation events.

The cost for the membership is only $25 per household.

In addition to the events and great support from other families and children, the benefits of community resources are abundant.  Don't forget the grandparents!  Memberships are a perfect way to include grandparents all year long.  Contact the office at (814) 455-3540 if you would like to gift a membership for a family.

A huge THANK YOU goes to our volunteers!

As the charity partner for the Lantern Fest, we were asked to recruit approximately 80 volunteers.  We ended up with 125 volunteers! Our volunteers built and packed 5,000 S'mores kits, packed marshmallows, worked at registration, bounce houses, merchandise, and arts & crafts.  Thank you to our amazing volunteers for helping us shine.

All of our volunteers' hard work earned Autism Society NWPA a donation from Lantern Fest in the amount of $7,500!

Dr. Jed Baker

Managing Frustration and Anxiety and Teaching Social Skills

WHEN:  Saturday, October 21, 2017

TIME:  8:00am to 3:00pm

Jed Baker, Ph.D. is the director of the Social Skills Training Project, a private organization serving individuals with autism and social communication problems.  He is on the professional advisory board of Autism Today, ASPEN, ANSER, YAI, the Kelberman Center and several other autism organizations.  In additional, he writes, lectures, and provides  training internationally on the topic of social skills training and managing challenging behaviors. He is an award winning author of nine books spanning a wide range of topics related to autism, including Overcoming Anxiety in Children and Teens. His work has also been featured on ABC World News, Nightline, the CBS Early Show, and the Discovery Health Channel.

Outcome objectives:

1.  Understand how  best to think about challenging behaviors to insure better outcomes.

2.  Learn strategies to deal effectively with anxiety and frustration; both to deescalate and prevent meltdowns.

3. Identify ways to motivate verbal and non-verbal students to want to socialize.

4. Learn how to choose effective strategies for teaching and generalizing skills.

5. Create programs for typical peers to accept students with disabilities, reduce bullying and model positive behaviors.

Friends & Pals Teen Club

WHEN:  First Thursday of the Month (September 7, October 5, November 2, December 7, February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3)

TIME:  6:00 to 7:30pm

Dinner will be served to the teens.

Teen Club (age 13 - 21) provides an opportunity for friendship, conversation, and FUN!  Teenagers need more independent social skills once they leave school of college or the job market.  Our group gives teens on the autism spectrum an opportunity to utilize their social skills and practice them in a comfortable environment.

The  club is facilitated by Warren Levy.

A parent mingle area will be provided from 6:00 - 7:30pm. Warren Levy will meet with parents/guardians from 6:00-6:30pm to discuss the monthly social skills lessons

LEGO SOCIAL CLUB

The LEGO Social Club is an effective way for children and teens with social difficulties associated with an autism spectrum disorder to improve their social interactions and communication skills.  The club is designed for grades K - 10.
